They're Here!

Two-hundred or more Christmas Trees have just arrived at the Park in Waterville
and the Masons of Sanger Lodge are setting up shop!

I'm not sure what the price is, per tree (last year it was $25.) or when the "store" actually opens, but I'm quite sure everything will be set up by the time you get there!

It's Winter again!

# 40

to BOB BELOUIN!

*************************

Today is Garbage Day.

It's 28.6 degrees. No precipitation, right now.

From WKTV: "Cooler weather is here to stay, along with some snow showers as we head into the weekend. Heavy lake effect snow will continue to fall across Western New York and across the Tug Hill to Watertown. Most of this snow will miss Central New York. A few flurries are possible along the southern extent of the band towards Old Forge and Turin. Little accumulation is expected today.

The lake band will shift south and the wind direction changes from the southwest to the northwest. Drier air and lighter winds will cause the band to weaken considerably as it moves south. Light snow showers will fall on Friday and Saturday across Central New York, with the best chance of accumulations west of Utica.

Cold weather is here to stay for the weekend. A storm system will move in from the northeast on Sunday, bringing a chance for widespread light snow and lake effect."

CLARIFICATION

It turns out that people aren't really aware of just how much the Parade of Lights Committee really takes on and/or just why they always appreciate your support!

According to Diane Marceau, "We purchase lights for the trees that are decorated in Monument Park & the lights on the firehouse swags. We usually do the 4 trees on the Barton St. side of the firehouse but due to lack of money this year, we were unable to purchase the lights for those trees. We also pay for the goodie bags from Santa & Mrs. Claus along with the prizes for the parade winners & the best decorated business."

Thanks for all of that information, Diane!

Yesterday's weather offered a bit of everything!

"Three Different Weather Whammies Hit...." from WKTV.

First it rained - hard!

I'd been to Utica, and this is what traffic on Genesee Street dealt with!

By the time I'd reached Clinton the rain had become "thick" and the Kirkland Township plow was just pulling out of its garage on Route 12B and heading up the Post Street hill.

Here in Waterville, it was definitely Winter, again, and an icy wind hurried pedestrians across the CVS parking lot.

The snow on Osborne Avenue was sort-of like oatmeal!

The Sangerfield plow was already taking care of things.

Brian Gibbons had the walkways and stairs of St. Bernard's Church all shovelled .........

................. but, out at the St. Bernard's Cemetery, one of the old Norway Spruce trees had fallen and was partly blocking one of the cemetery roadways.

*****************************

This Hanover Road woodshed is filled to overflowing.

On Sally Road, a homely thicket of burdock was suddenly beautiful - transformed by the snow into what appeared to be bushes blooming with pearls!

"Community Pleads to Keep WCS Position" The Waterville Times

"Almost 80 people attended last week’s meeting of the Waterville Board of Education to show support to keep the position of assistant treasurer/tax collector. Among the 28 people who spoke to request the board not eliminate the position was Linda Hughes, who has filled the role for the last eight years. Under the proposal by Superintendent Gary Lonczak, Hughes would have been laid off Dec. 10. Instead, board members pulled the item from the agenda and did not vote on it." Jody Hildreth makes taking pictures look so easy! But then, when the rest of us try to take a picture of a fountain or a bird or a fern, we just don't seem to get the same results! Well, yes: Jody has a really different sort of camera, to be sure, AND he takes time to do things "just so"! I, for one, appreciate all of his work, and am so glad that he's willing to share the results with all of us!

Jody was recently published in the Birding journal, WildBird Magazine. He wrote an article titled "Inspire Birders-to-be: With these proven ideas, you can show the wonder of birds to children." The article just came out in the Jan/Feb 2011 issue. This is the same magazine that awarded Jody the “Birder of the Year” award in 2004 for his work with children and birding.

A visitor to the village watched wide-eyed and smiling as the children and singers on floats and garbage and fire trucks strung with Christmas lights made a glowing train along Main Street, last Friday night. "How nice that the Village does that!" she said, but was corrected: "No: it's not really the 'village' (as in 'municipality') - it's just a bunch of people who've done it for years!" And a suggestion was made:

To contribute to the Parade of Lights Committee's work, a check made out to the Parade of Lights should be mailed to;
Lisa Belfield, 147 W. Main St.

Perhaps YOU watched in wide-eyed, smiling delight and
would like to make a donation, too!

LOST!

A "HELP" REQUEST FROM JACK BROUILLETTE.

"Due to my carelessness, I lost a

red glossy pocket folder

of DMV documents (vehicle titles, etc)

some where between 2301 Hanover Road near Shanley, down Grant Hill,
Lombard Rd, out to the Dugway in Clinton.

Although they can be replaced, there will be a nice finder fee if located and returned."

Thank you!"

The WKTV weather forecast: "A flood watch is in effect for all of Central New York through Wednesday night. A high wind watch is in effect for the following counties: Herkimer, Hamilton, Fulton, Montgomery, Schoharie through Wednesday night.

Total rainfall will range between 2-3", with the potential for some flooding in areas close to streams, creeks, and rivers.

Despite the wet weather, temperatures will remain above normal over the next few days, with highs in the 40s. Cooler weather arrvives behind the mid week storm, with temperatures settling back into the 30s with lake effect snow showers Thursday through Saturday."

The sky, yesterday afternoon, gave a different forecast:

"Red sun at night, sailor's delight ........"

Sunset from Brothertown Road.

Directly over my head, on California Road.

*****************

It was a mild day, and the sun shone on the little green apples on an old tree near the Pleasant Valley Grange.

The Tanners' home on Route 20 is all decorated, and ....

........... a gingerbread house and gingerbread men are delightful day or night at Dan Maine's woodworking shop on Madison Street!

I'm not a big fan of the new "LED" lights, but I do like this multi-colored combination on the shrubbery of a Putnam Street residence!

Also on Putnam Street, the Verdon family's Santa rides again AND when the house and yard's many lights are lit it's time to pull over to the curb, tune your radio to 87.9 FM and listen to the music. THEN the pattern of lights will make sense! What a fun thing they've done, synchronizing lights and music together!

I spent most of the day, when I should have been outdoors, staring at pixels!

But it's that season!

Frosty Monday morning

25 degrees and crispy-clear.

It's Garbage Day.

From WKTV: "High pressure will finally clear us out today. Plenty of sunshine expected this afternoon, with highs climbing into the low 40s across most areas.

Our next storm system will bring a heavy rainfall to Central New York. Clouds increase ahead of the storm tonight. The rain begins tomorrow afternoon and continues through Wednesday. Total rainfall will range between 2-3", with the potential for some flooding in areas that saw heavy snow over the weekend.

Despite the wet weather, temperatures will remain above normal over the next few days, with highs in the 40s. Cooler weather arrvives behind the mid week storm, with temperatures settling back into the 30s with lake effect snow showers Thursday through Saturday."

(I didn't find a score from the "Alumni Tournament" - check The Waterville Times, tomorrow!)

I wasn't here for the Parade of Lights, on Friday evening, but I understand that there were "the biggest crowds ever" and that the parade was "the best ever!"

You can get an idea of that from seeing these photographs. Thank you, everyone, for sending them!

Cathy and Sarah Burbules-Sexton were in town and sent lots of pictures from Cathy's iPhone
taken during the Parade ................ and ...........

............ at the Historical Society.

Diane Marceau sent me some from the Parade of Lights Committee, and Jody Hildreth wrote to tell me that I could use any of the pictures that he had taken and posted on his facebook page! The next are his. Thank You, Jody!

This is the 6th Grade Band getting ready!
