This morning's Observer-Dispatch also notes the death of

Mr. Charles B. Miner, 91, of Oriskany Falls.

****************

From the Waterville Times, January 17, 1996

Past 50 Years Have Been Busy for Vet

"Last week The Waterville Times published an article by Capt Edward C. Am (U. S. Army retired) about a soldier in his regiment Sgt Charles Miner of Oriskany Falls, who saved the lives of several of his comrades in Germany in 1944.
Miner, after his honorable discharge from the Army, married Millie Clair in 1945. The couple recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Dec. 23, with a dinner at the Landmark in Bouckville, a tradition they have followed for many years.
Miner recently recalled how the couple fell in love with the former Neil Jeffers farm, and in 1947 purchased the land. They spent the next 20 years developing the farm into a
nine hole golf course before selling it to its present owners, Dave and Judy Keshler, in 1984. Before establishing the Barker Brook Golf Club, Miner worked for ..... machine shop, Mather, Evans and Diehl, in Utica. Miner said that he and his wife, Millie, spent a great deal of time designing the golf course, which had its beginnings in the fact that Millie used to like to go outside their house to hit a few balls for practice.
Miner said that he has kept in touch with his commanding officer, Major Am, whom he described as a"great officer." Miner said that he liked the service, but really wanted
to get back home after the war. He is a graduate of Oriskany Falls Union Free School, and attended Cornell University for a year before going to work in Utica.
The Miners have always worked very hard for many community organizations, and are still very active in the community."

- add-on at 7 o'clock - it's getting light out and I can still see the 1' (one foot) mark on my "snow stake," so the storm has not brought us as much snow as had been predicted.

It also appears that there WILL be school in Waterville!

Wednesday wrap-up

It's doing it!

"Lake Effect"

All you need to know about "lake effect" storms,
storm "warnings" and "watches" -- from The Weather Channel.

I don't have to tell you what the weather is like in Waterville:

just look!

Oooops!

SLOW DOWN!

It was snowing too hard, this afternoon, for me to take
any really "pretty" pictures..........

............. but I had to stop and do a "double-take" when I spotted some elves climbing a ladder!

Sue may be wanting to use these, tomorrow!

Perhaps, by the time Christmas decorations are taken down,
ponds and lakes will be frozen!

SPECIAL NOTE!

Hedwig Eisenhut will be 96 on Sunday!

Monday afternoon for Tuesday

Right now, it sounds as if the words for tomorrow are :

"Weather Permitting!"

At 6 o'clock Monday evening, it's 19 degrees and there's a bitterly cold wind that feels as if it's coming to us directly from the North Pole!

**********

WKTV's predictions: "**A lake effect snow warning is in effect for Madison, and Chenango County through 1AM Thursday***

**A lake effect snow advisory is in effect for Oneida, Lewis and Otsego County through 7PM Tuesday**

**Winter weather advisories continue for the Adirondacks**

A flash freeze is taking place this early afternoon as temperatures continue to fall through the 20s. Exercise caution on the roadways. Some untreated surfaces will be a bit slick. Cold weather builds in from the west as the weekend storm pulls away. Winds from the west will bring in this cold weather, and the wind chill today will make it feel more like teens.

Cold weather settles in tonight, with lake effect snow developing south and west of Utica. Several inches of snow will fall tonight for Madison, Chenango, and Otsego County tonight through Wednesday night.

Outside of the lake effect bands, cold weather and intervals of sunshine are expected. Turning less chilly as we head into the weekend."

********************

The DPW was busy, today. The Bobcat scooped last week's leftover snowbanks ...............

.......... and load after load was trucked to the old dump on Route 315.

HAPPENING ON TUESDAY

Judging will take place Tuesday evening - weather permitting! - and the judges (who are always from out-of-town) will have quite a job of it! Although there seem to be fewer large lighting displays this year, probably because the weather hasn't been conducive to outdoor decoration-work, there are a great many lovely doorway and window decorations.

The doorway above is at Jim and Nancy Morgan's home on Stafford Avenue, where the windows all have matching wreaths, too !

Marilyn's "decorator's touch" is always evident at the Daniel Maine residence on McCabe Road.

I don't know who to thank!!

Was it you??

Sometime today, big bunches of evergreens with huge red bows were tied to the eight posts of the Bandstand AND red bows also added to finials and the wrought iron railings on the park side of the structure. (If you saw the elves at work and / or know who they were, please let me know!)

Here is WKTV's latest forecast: "**A lake effect snow warning is in effect for Madison, and Chenango County through 1AM Thursday***

A lake effect snow watch continues for Southern Oneida and Otsego County

A mild start to the day, but winter will slowly trickle back into the picture starting today. Colder weather builds in from the west as the weekend storm pulls away. Temperatures start out in the 30s but will fall into the low 20s by later this afternoon.

I like this pretty doorway on Babbott Avenue.

Occasionally, I come across a "murder"* of crows all gathered in the middle of a country road, snacking on something they've found there. Is it grain or corn dropped from a truck or, perhaps the road salt?

(*Just as there are names for groups of other animals and birds - a "parliament" of owls or a "gaggle" of geese - a flock of crows or ravens is a "murder." At least that's what Google sources say! Search "collective nouns" for more.)

It's has been raining all day and, although above freezing, not as much ice has melted has everyone had hoped. WKTV predicts that: "Winds will continue to stay gusty throughout the day, with strong winds possible in the higher elevations of the Adirondacks. Rain turns to a brief period of snow tonight. Accumulations by the Monday morning commute look to be light, but more snow will fall on Monday afternoon. Cold temperatures will settle in for the work week, with highs only in the 20s on Tuesday and Wednesday. Additional localized lake effect is likely this week."
