It's 36 degrees at 5:45.

We had a beautifully "white Christmas," but it looks as if we could have at least a partly green New Year's Day!

I took this picture on the last day of 2006. It might happen again!

The WKTV forecast: "The warmup is still on track to take place (Friday) and Saturday. Temperatures warm up into the low 40s on Friday, and upper 40s on Saturday. The weather stays cloudy but dry through Friday, Friday night, and most of Saturday. A cold front will bring some light rain showers Saturday night. These rain showers may briefly turn over to snow showers late Saturday night.

A generally quiet stretch of weather takes place Sunday through Wednesday. Some light snow showers will be possible on Monday, but nothing significant is in the forecast for the foreseeable future."

We're going to be hearing more and more and more about "natural gas," "horizontal hydrofracking" and "Marcellus Shale" from groups and individuals who either support drilling for the fuel that "we" are sitting on or who are adamantly opposed to having our water, environment, agriculture, and infrastructure threatened - or, even, destroyed - by associated traffic, equipment and machinery

...........BECAUSE ............

the southernmost part of Oneida County is on the northern edge of the "Marcellus Shale" bed as are counties to our south.

This is one of these issues that seems so large that
one is inclined to simply say, "Que sera, sera!"
(What will be, will be!)

Governor Patterson has placed a moratorium on horizontal hydrofracking prohibiting the practice until July at the earliest.

Otsego County (Otsego2000.org) has a powerfully informative (and persuasive) website.

I spent all yesterday afternoon - while John Eisenhut's crew of carpenters made sure that no amount of snow and ice will be able to bring down the roof over my back porch! - and part of the evening going from one link to another to another and could probably spend several more days the same way.
In view of the amount of technical and confusing material that's "out there," you can surely become better informed in a far more expeditious manner by taking a couple of hours to go to the Mt. Markham High School next Tuesday night!

This nice letter from John and Ann Cockell (Wendy Sexton's cousins) in Hatfield Peverel, England!

"This is just to say "Hi" to all relatives and friends in the Waterville and Deansboro areas from a very cold and grey country called the UK. After several weeks of snow and temperatures well below freezing we are all getting a little tired of slipping and sliding everywhere. Our one foot of snow is little compared with what you have had but it is enough to bring everything here grinding to a halt. Everything, that is, except those intent on their Christmas shopping, and there is nothing - but NOTHING - that will stop those folks hunting for their bargains. We have had major airports closed, rail services totally disrupted, trucks stuck in snow and blocking highways - but apparently the authorities are doing everything they can do sort out the mess and it is no-one's fault that the UK is, effectively, closed for business!

Coupled with that, our petrol (gas) prices have just reached a new high - in your terms, we are now paying $9 per gallon, with a further rise due in a week's time when purchase tax is increased from 17.5% to 20%. So, if you think $3.25 per gallon is a lot, imagine the cost of filling up a car over here.

We wish all the readers of "the blog" a happy, healthy, peaceful and prosperous New Year and maybe - just maybe - we shall get to see some of you again in 2011.

While the East Coast has been hit with a memorable blizzard, the most we've seen of it has been about an inch of new snow and some fiercely strong wind.
It's been cold all day, but there's hope for a little warm-up tomorrow!

From WKTV: "Some lake effect snow will whiten the ground on Tuesday. More snow showers will linger on Wednesady and then our weather patterns take a major turn. Very mild weather makes its way into Central New York for the last few days of 2010. With high temperatures exceeding 40 degrees on Friday and Saturday, many areas will turn green. "Very cold and windy conditions are in store for today. While actual temperatures will be in the low to perhaps mid 20s, it is going to feel more like the single digits to below zero! Any light snow showers or flurries across the region are expected to taper. Tonight, lake effect snow showers will begin developing becoming more organized by Tuesday morning. It will be a cold and blustery night with temperatures actually climbing through the 20s.

Winds will become more westerly tomorrow shifting the steadier lake effect snow just north of Syracuse. However, lake effect snow showers will remain a threat through about midweek with quieter weather for Thursday and Friday."

"Before the holiday season the Boy Scouts of Troop 108 cut down several trees to make our annual Reindeer for Troops overseas. Here is a picture of the boys showing off the trees at the Oriskany Falls Fish and Game club. Along with the trees, the boys collected and donated toiletries, games, and candy to include in the boxes. Also enclosed is a picture of Josh Tice proudly displaying the tree he received from our boys."

What a really nice project for the troop! I'm sure their efforts are greatly appreciated!

Those of you who know me know that I really detest housework and will go to some lengths to avoid any contact with dust-cloths, vacuum cleaners or flatirons. Not only do I not LIKE using these pieces of equipment, I often get injured by them ---- and it's happened again! I grabbed a broom, last evening, to sweep the light covering of snow from my back porch steps so that I could add a few shakes of "sno-melt" to bits of ice. Before I knew it ---- no, I didn't slip on the ice! ---- in giving the top step a final really good sweep, I managed to turn my left wrist 'way too far in the wrong direction. I knew right away that I should never have picked up the broom ---------------- and now, twenty-four hours later, I'm wearing a bag of frozen peas and typing with just one hand.

There's no sharp pain; no huge swelling and/or discoloration; just total, 100% aching pain and everything I do reminds me of the folly of it all! I've learned my lesson: no more brooms for me and, if you come to visit, be prepared to practice your ice-climbing technique!

Yesterday was one of the reasons I love living here!

Yes - I saw some wonderful old friends and shared memories going back 42 years, but it was also a spectacular day in the country!

The rime that had blanketed Paris Hill, yesterday, had spread southward, and this is what the trees looked like as I began the drive up Craigfoot Road.

Whe I reached the 5 corners, I headed straight ahead, up Tubbs Road.

The scenery was a magnificent Christmas gift and reminded my why I don't want to be in Florida!

THEN the pattern of lights will make sense!

It's 23 degrees and overcast.

WKTV's morning weather forecast: "Clouds will be stubborn to break today with some low level moisture lingering about. We'll likely see a few peeks of sunshine slowly develop this afternoon.

Expect chilly conditions this evening and overnight. Temperatures will fall back into the teens if you will be out later this evening to church services. We expect dry conditions.

A weak upper level trough will dive into the interior northeast for later tomorrow and Sunday, giving us the chance for some light snow showers. A much larger storm will track close to the coast on Sunday and Monday. The storm still looks to pass to the east of CNY, but will likely bring an accumulating snow to portions of Massachusetts and Long Island.

Chilly conditions early next week will give way to milder weather before the first of the year."

Main Street and the Post Office / Dollar General parking lots were
as crowded as the one at CVS!

West of Sangerfield on Route 20, a "conga line" of two State snowplows were clearing the two- or three-inch accumulation of snow. You can see that there's rime on the trees .........

........... but it was nothing like the frosting that I found in Hanover, a mile or two north of the village.

There, the frozen fog was nearly an inch thick on twigs and weeds and it was a beautiful sight!

At the very "top" of Shanley Road, a super-sized greeting card!

Later, this afternoon, this was the view of "downtown" Sangerfield
from Newberry Road!

despite day-long searches by many friends, and Jennifer Neff has asked me
to post the family pet's picture again.

"Casey is 15 and 1/2 years old, is partially blind, deaf and very disoriented because of her age. She has a large spot (mole/wart) on her forehead and a large lump on her right side near her back leg. Don gave Casey to me as a puppy for Christmas 15 years ago, we really are hoping for a Christmas miracle. "

Between those projects I cooked little "elf" goodies and wrote more Christmas cards to put into the mail in the morning and
finished this card, for all of you!

In my morning mail was a letter from Jennifer Neff asking for blog-readers' help:

" Our 15 1/2 year old black lab,Casey, slipped out of her collar from our back yard on Berrill Ave. around 7 pm on December 21.

We had a search party looking for her until after 10 pm with no luck. We are hoping someone took her in. She is partially blind, deaf and very disoriented because of her age. She has a large spot (mole/wart) on her forehead and a large lump on her right side near her back leg. Don gave Casey to me as a puppy for Christmas 15 years ago, we really are hoping for a Christmas miracle. "

Past 50 Years Have Been Busy for Vet

"Last week The Waterville Times published an article by Capt Edward C. Am (U. S. Army retired) about a soldier in his regiment Sgt Charles Miner of Oriskany Falls, who saved the lives of several of his comrades in Germany in 1944.
Miner, after his honorable discharge from the Army, married Millie Clair in 1945. The couple recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Dec. 23, with a dinner at the Landmark in Bouckville, a tradition they have followed for many years.
Miner recently recalled how the couple fell in love with the former Neil Jeffers farm, and in 1947 purchased the land. They spent the next 20 years developing the farm into a
nine hole golf course before selling it to its present owners, Dave and Judy Keshler, in 1984. Before establishing the Barker Brook Golf Club, Miner worked for ..... machine shop, Mather, Evans and Diehl, in Utica. Miner said that he and his wife, Millie, spent a great deal of time designing the golf course, which had its beginnings in the fact that Millie used to like to go outside their house to hit a few balls for practice.
Miner said that he has kept in touch with his commanding officer, Major Am, whom he described as a"great officer." Miner said that he liked the service, but really wanted
to get back home after the war. He is a graduate of Oriskany Falls Union Free School, and attended Cornell University for a year before going to work in Utica.
The Miners have always worked very hard for many community organizations, and are still very active in the community."

**Winter weather advisories continue for the Adirondacks**

A flash freeze is taking place this early afternoon as temperatures continue to fall through the 20s. Exercise caution on the roadways. Some untreated surfaces will be a bit slick. Cold weather builds in from the west as the weekend storm pulls away. Winds from the west will bring in this cold weather, and the wind chill today will make it feel more like teens.

Cold weather settles in tonight, with lake effect snow developing south and west of Utica. Several inches of snow will fall tonight for Madison, Chenango, and Otsego County tonight through Wednesday night.

Outside of the lake effect bands, cold weather and intervals of sunshine are expected. Turning less chilly as we head into the weekend."

HAPPENING ON TUESDAY

Judging will take place Tuesday evening - weather permitting! - and the judges (who are always from out-of-town) will have quite a job of it! Although there seem to be fewer large lighting displays this year, probably because the weather hasn't been conducive to outdoor decoration-work, there are a great many lovely doorway and window decorations.

The doorway above is at Jim and Nancy Morgan's home on Stafford Avenue, where the windows all have matching wreaths, too !

Marilyn's "decorator's touch" is always evident at the Daniel Maine residence on McCabe Road.

Wonderful "Tapestry" concert, this afternoon, but now .......

It's 9:00 Saturday evening and something's going to happen!

From the O-D: A winter weather advisory for freezing rain is in effect for the area from 6 a.m. until 1 p.m. Sunday, according to the National Weather Service in Binghamton.

Some snow is possible Sunday night as colder air changes the rain back to snow.

Another round of heavy lake effect snow will become possible across portions of Central New York starting Monday and could last through Thursday."

And, from WKTV: "A winter storm will likely impact the area Sunday into Monday, followed by another shot of cold weather early next week. Right now it appears that a brief period of freezing rain is possible Sunday morning. Any ice should turn to plain rain by Sunday mid morning to early afternoon. Rain continues into Sunday night before colder air moves into Central NY. Snow showers and wind will follow the storm on Monday."

That weather will not, however, spoil Santa's plans to visitwith children (of all ages!) at the old Depot in Deansboro on Sunday afternoon. Be there to welcome him!

Weather forecast from Channel 10, YNN: "We will get a bit of a break on Thursday with any lake effect snow showers tapering to flurries by midday and afternoon. It will be the coldest day of the season with highs only in the low 20s. Scattered snow showers will spread in later Friday with temperatures climbing back to around 30. Saturday will be fairly quiet with highs in the mid 30s. Although still early, there is the potential for a large impacting storm system to work towards us Sunday into Sunday night. Both are night scenes: one from Park Place, showing the monument, and the other from within the park - my favorite. The prints, on super-thick, glossy stock, are each 11" high and 14" wide and will fit standard mats and/or frames.

The big news on Saturday was that

'The Trees are in the Park!"

And, in no time at all, they were leaving, again!

It had snowed just enough to make it look Christmasy in the village and, out in the country, Troy Bishop's cows were grazing in the snow.

There was plenty more snow this morning! Tom Stiles, from Stockwell, said he thought we got more than 8", but that didn't faze Gallaghers' cattle at all.

The Waterville DPW's "Bobcat" was out early, this morning, finding the sidewalk along Route 12 south of the village.

About fifteen minutes later, it was at the corner of Babbott and W. Bacon.

Today is Garbage Day.

It's 28.6 degrees. No precipitation, right now.

From WKTV: "Cooler weather is here to stay, along with some snow showers as we head into the weekend. Heavy lake effect snow will continue to fall across Western New York and across the Tug Hill to Watertown. Most of this snow will miss Central New York. A few flurries are possible along the southern extent of the band towards Old Forge and Turin. Little accumulation is expected today.

The lake band will shift south and the wind direction changes from the southwest to the northwest. Drier air and lighter winds will cause the band to weaken considerably as it moves south. Light snow showers will fall on Friday and Saturday across Central New York, with the best chance of accumulations west of Utica.

Cold weather is here to stay for the weekend. A storm system will move in from the northeast on Sunday, bringing a chance for widespread light snow and lake effect."

It turns out that people aren't really aware of just how much the Parade of Lights Committee really takes on and/or just why they always appreciate your support!

According to Diane Marceau, "We purchase lights for the trees that are decorated in Monument Park & the lights on the firehouse swags. We usually do the 4 trees on the Barton St. side of the firehouse but due to lack of money this year, we were unable to purchase the lights for those trees. We also pay for the goodie bags from Santa & Mrs. Claus along with the prizes for the parade winners & the best decorated business."

Yesterday's weather offered a bit of everything!

"Three Different Weather Whammies Hit...." from WKTV.

First it rained - hard!

I'd been to Utica, and this is what traffic on Genesee Street dealt with!

By the time I'd reached Clinton the rain had become "thick" and the Kirkland Township plow was just pulling out of its garage on Route 12B and heading up the Post Street hill.

Here in Waterville, it was definitely Winter, again, and an icy wind hurried pedestrians across the CVS parking lot.

The snow on Osborne Avenue was sort-of like oatmeal!

The Sangerfield plow was already taking care of things.

Brian Gibbons had the walkways and stairs of St. Bernard's Church all shovelled .........

................. but, out at the St. Bernard's Cemetery, one of the old Norway Spruce trees had fallen and was partly blocking one of the cemetery roadways.

This Hanover Road woodshed is filled to overflowing.

On Sally Road, a homely thicket of burdock was suddenly beautiful - transformed by the snow into what appeared to be bushes blooming with pearls!

Jody Hildreth makes taking pictures look so easy! But then, when the rest of us try to take a picture of a fountain or a bird or a fern, we just don't seem to get the same results! Well, yes: Jody has a really different sort of camera, to be sure, AND he takes time to do things "just so"! I, for one, appreciate all of his work, and am so glad that he's willing to share the results with all of us!

Jody was recently published in the Birding journal, WildBird Magazine. He wrote an article titled "Inspire Birders-to-be: With these proven ideas, you can show the wonder of birds to children." The article just came out in the Jan/Feb 2011 issue. This is the same magazine that awarded Jody the “Birder of the Year” award in 2004 for his work with children and birding.

"How nice that the Village does that!" she said, but was corrected: "No: it's not really the 'village' (as in 'municipality') - it's just a bunch of people who've done it for years!" I'm not a big fan of the new "LED" lights, but I do like this multi-colored combination on the shrubbery of a Putnam Street residence!

Also on Putnam Street, the Verdon family's Santa rides again AND when the house and yard's many lights are lit it's time to pull over to the curb, tune your radio to 87.9 FM and listen to the music. THEN the pattern of lights will make sense! What a fun thing they've done, synchronizing lights and music together!

WKTV's forecast: "Mild weather arrives in Central New York today, along with heavy rain and even some thunder this morning. Drier weather arrives this afternoon, along with increasing winds. Gusty winds late today, with highs in the upper 50s across most of the area.

Cooler weather tonight will produce some snow showers and flurries late. Lake effect snow showers and flurries will continue early tomorrow, with most areas seeing just a light coating. The higher elevations of Madison County could see a half inch or more.

Thanksgiving starts out chilly but dry. The next storm system will bring the chance for a light mix of rain, sleet, and possibly freezing rain late in the day. Cooler weather arrives for Black Friday, with some lake effect snow showers and flurries."

Getting ready for Winter!

The Village DPW was out and around, yesterday, covering fire hydrants with protective barrels.

The only "snow" was spotted by sharp-eyed Dick Martin: a couple dozen snow geese and some more-ordinary Canada Geese in a field behind the Coffmanns on Route 12.

I spent a couple of hours driving around the countryside looking for more Snow Geese, but didn't see any.

I did notice that the Gallaghers' cows, next to Osborn Avenue, have either become oblivious to rain or have learned to ignore it!

Kevin Ford received the New York State Advisor of the Year Award at this year's New York State Student Council Conference in Buffalo, on Sunday night. Kevin is the co-advisor of the Student Council at Poland Central School, where he teaches Earth Science, and a former president of Student Council at Waterville (Class of 2001).

A nice letter from Denise Gelfuso, who grew up in Sauquoit but has lived in Waterville for seven years, who writes:
"I would love to see someone organize a night of Christmas Caroling in the park. What a wonderful way to bring the community together and get in the holiday spirit other than some good old fashion Christmas Caroling. With sheet music for all, hot chocolate, cookies and best of all the people and the wonderful memories this could make. I would back anyone 100% that is willing to organize this event and feel we would get a great outcome."

I wrote back to her saying that I remember doing just that sort of thing, here in Waterville, many, many years ago. "Homestead" provided little books of Christmas Carols and there would be a couple dozen of us who would troop around the village, singing. I think that must have been when Kraig Pritts was the director of the Community Chorus.

Speaking of "old times" ...... I was chatting with Jean Davis, yesterday, recalling that FORTY YEARS AGO NOW we were both on the committee involved in planning the Village's Centennial Celebration, one of the major events in community history, that took place during the Summer of '71.

Quite recently someone told me that they were researching the history of the "Academic Union" - the WCS Year Book. Yesterday I came across this article in The Waterville Times: "High School Publication America's Oldest Annual" having first been issued around 1848. Unfortunately, these PDFs are fairly difficult to read because of the way that the originals were photographed for microfilming in 1972. To get the best possible view, go to the Historical Society and ask to be allowed to see the original copy of that issue! Clicking these links will at least give you an idea!

Some lake effect rain and snow showers will develop as cold air flows over the warmer waters of Lake Ontario. A few flakes of snow are possible over the higher terrain, but little of any snow accumulation is expected. Drier, cool weather arrives Friday and will linger through the weekend.

The Annual

PRIZE SPEAKING CONTEST

at the High School at 7:00

I spent 'way too much time, yesterday, searching The Waterville Times for early press releases about the contest: the most informative that I found was that of 1873 --- written just as the "new "Union School" at the corner where the Municipal Hall now stands was ending its first year.

There was great anticipation for the competition between the two "literary" societies - the Whittier and the Irving, with all of the students belonging to one or the other - and Putnam Hall was "filled to overflowing" with villagers eager to hear original compositions, orations and even - on one accasion - to witness demonstrations of what must have been synchronized calesthenics!

(First prize in oration and declamation, at the end of the year, was a Webster's Unabridged Dictionary; in Calesthenics, the winning society was presented with "the silver dumbells.")

The evening was referred to as a "reunion" of the two societies, but I could not learn when they had actually originated. "The Grammar and Academic departments of the school are divided into to literary societies known, respectively, as 'the Whittier Society' and 'the Irving Society.' These societies assume charge of rhetorical* exercises on every Friday afternoon, each in competition with the other and each acting as critics of the other." May 8, 1873.

According to the Waterville Central School website, the Prize Speaking Contest is "A long-standing tradition at WCS, this contest was started by Dr. Selden H. Talcott. He graduated from Waterville High School in 1869, went on to Hamilton College and later practiced medicine in Waterville.

The contest has been sponsored by the Waterville Rotary Club since 1964. Advisors for the program are Mr. Vincent Elacqua and Mr. Donald Brown II, Faculty members at Waterville High School."

This year there will be three categories that include: Dramatic Monologues, Comedic Monologues, and Poetic Monologues. Prizes are donated and awarded by the Waterville Rotary Club and refreshments will be provided by the High School Student Council.

YESTERDAY

.......... you can't always tell people what to do - or NOT do - and, so, eight of her friends and neighbors gave Pauline Barnes a beautifully festive luncheon for her 95th birthday, yesterday, at "Michael's." On hand for the occasion were her sister, Jeannette Doyle, Cathy Murphy, Lurena McNamara, MaryJane and Al Toussaint, Judy Chrisman, Paula Gray, Mary Margaret Hull and Betty Ann Budlong Zyla.

(And I happen to know that there's something special for me to post tomorrow, too!)

My daily "route" takes me past the beaver pond on Burnham Road. It's easier to see, now that the weeds have died, but there was no sign of beaver work in progress.

Just fifty feet or so up the hill from the pond is the historic Chenango Canal. This particular stretch is nicely filled with water and I inadvertently scared off some mallards who were enjoying the afternoon. The original "towpath," at this point, is completely buried in brush and brambles.

It was mild but rainy. I swung westward up over West Hill and beyond Skyline Drive to what I now refer to as "Amish Country." A great deal of construction has been going on all summer long, and this new home is nearing completion. Eight or ten Amish gentlemen were working on a new barn, right next door ............

.............. and a pair of Cydesdale work horses were waiting next to a wagon for whatever their next chore would be.

It was nearly dark by the time I got back into "home" territory, and Christmas lights were on at this home in Sangerfield!

Clouds and rain showers continue today as an area of low pressure passes to our north and west. Winds shift from the east to the west this morning and will increase throughout the day. HERE AND THERE

I did go to the library to see the home school students' display of digital photography and I thoroughly enjoyed it! True, with digital cameras and computers, producing a clear photograph isn't the trick that it used to be in the days of darkrooms, but what amazed me about this exhibit was the variety of subject matter: from several beautiful close-ups of Nature's creations to some lovely portraiture and still more images making the most of shadows AND the special effects offered by the media so very artistically!

I'm sorry, but because of lighting in the hallway, I couldn't take good close-ups of all of the prints: you'll just have to go and see the exhibition for yourselves!

Rain tomorrow night through Wednesday, followed by even cooler temperatures. It will be cold enough by the end of the week for a few snow showers and flurries."

The pond at the foot of Grant Hill has more water in it now than it has had all Summer long!

Here is Mr. St. Peter's latest blog post. If you are able to view his blog site, you'll see several new photographs!

"Today began with a sightseeing opportunity. We were able to see the White House, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, and the WWII Veterans Memorial. I had not been to Washington DC since I was in the 6thgrade. It was nice to be able to see those things that I did not appreciate back then. We returned at 12:30 for our official welcome into the Blue Ribbon Schools family. Aba Kumi, Director of the National Blue Ribbons School program welcomed us in grand fashion and was accompanied by the Winston Churchill High School Jazz Ensemble which sounded like a professional orchestra. Ms. Kumi told us we were part of an elite group of educators. Since its inception in 1982 just over6,000 schools have been recognized as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. Great Job MPS and the WCS community! We then heard from Thelma Melendez de Santa Ana the assistant secretary of Education who further inspired us to continue our charge providing a great education for our students. After that, we were afforded time to network with our colleagues from other states. We then returned for a question and answer session about what it means to be a Blue Ribbon School. Each panelist had the same message, to celebrate the award but don’t become complacent because there is still much work to be done. I am off to dinner and tomorrow we will officially receive the award.

"I just finished up my digital photography classes offered at the Library in the afternoons particularly for home schoolers. I thought they did fabulous! It is hard to believe that one of my best photographers was only 12. (Ages 12-18) I am also still recovering from the fact that despite the fact we were using hand cut paper rulers I'd printed off the internet, they all could MEASURE when it came time to mount their images. Measuring is obviously not part of the new math curriculum in the public school, so it was a such a treat to have kids who knew what an 1/8 of inch was. "This week I explained why and how artists show their work in galleries and had them mount their own works and hang the show themselves. I gave them some postcards, to keep and to invite visitors. I've also asked the Times if they would review the show as that would be a real experience for the kids. I don't know if they will have time or space or not, but am hoping you too could mention the show in your blog, just to teach about getting publicity and press."

We count on the Parade of Lights Committee to come up with - and hang - lots and lots of "twinkle lights," every year, and I know that they help make sure that Santa Claus has plenty of toys for all the boys and girls who come to see him after the Parade.
